Negative Effects of Polarization in Society

The following are 13 ways that polarization contributes to a less stable, less cooperative, and more divided society.

• Causes people to become skeptical of politicians which erodes trust in government institutions.

• Leads to the rise of extremist views and ideologies, as people mentally and emotionally position themselves in “silos” which causes politicians and their followers to become more entrenched in their beliefs and less open to opposing viewpoints.
